Paris 2008: Heuliez Friendly

Well, it certainly looks pretty friendly. Plus, powered only by electrons, it will be friendly to our environment too. What is it? The Heuliez Friendly, which debuted at this year's Paris Motor Show. Three seems to be a theme here, with a trio of electric motors to choose from, three different vehicle lengths to be offered and a seating capacity of yourself and two of your best friends. According to reports, the French automaker expects its Friendly to hit 70 miles per hour and its nickel metal hydride battery to last for 140 miles. After it's spent, the Friendly can be recharged via any standard wall outlet.

Heuliez plans to begin selling its Friendly in Europe in 2010. Also on the schedule are kit-assembled remakes of the G-Wiz from Reva Motors. These electric vehicles would be the first cars ever to wear the Heuliez badge, as the company has so far only created modules such as convertible tops for other automakers.

Nissan creates "Pure Drive," a green label for European markets

Like many other automakers in Europe, Nissan has created a special marketing badge to identify the least polluting vehicles across its range which will be used both in Europe and Japan. The chosen name is Pure Drive, which I think is one of the least imaginative on the market. Sibling company Renault's ECO2 label is more fun, as is its TV spot. As we have mentioned here, the "green label" is usually applied to a company's least powerful models that also have higher gear ratios, low-rolling resistance tires and some aerodynamic work. As for Nissan, the label is applied to those vehicles which emit less than 140 g/km of CO2. The new Pixo, the 1.2-liter gas and 1.5-liter diesel Micra and Note, the 1.5-liter diesel Qashqai, Qashquai+2 and Tiida (the Versa) now all come in Pure Drive versions.

60 Minutes on "The Race For The Electric Car"

Want to watch Lesley Stahl and Elon Musk tool around in a Tesla Roadster? If you missed the duo on 60 Minutes last night, you can still catch it online. The stalwart CBS reporter takes a 12-minute look at "The Race for the Electric Car." The piece starts out by talking the need for new battery technology, but then becomes a sort of personaity profile.

This happens when Stahl chats with Bob Lutz and his role in bringing the Volt to life. While he tells her he doesn't want to repeat his "global warming is a 'total crock of sh*t'" comment on the family news show (maybe all the flak had an effect), he does admit his personal carbon footprint isn't exactly small. With two helicopters and two jets in his family, not to mention all of his cars, Lutz is still a tempting target for mainstream news editors to use as a poster boy for GM's greenwashing. Still, in the rest of the piece we get to see people handbuilding Tesla Roadsters, an Aptera driving down the road and a clip of the Fisker Karma. Oh, and Bob Lutz kind of gloating over what's happenend to Tesla.

Watch the video after the break.

Go-Eco Continues Its Amazing Progression.

The New York Auto Show has ended, but we had a wonderful time, and it was worth our being there. There was so much to take in, and we managed to meet a lot of great people who seem very much interested in the growth and progression of alternative/ clean-fuel technologies. There were a number of new announcements from the major automakers with respect to their respective "green" initiatives. GM's much hyped Volt, a PHEV expected to go into production in the next couple of years, was actually quit… Continue

Go Eco!

Mr. Mayor, may I introduce, Go-Eco.

Sometimes we wish we could see some sort of barometer that measured the growth of Go-Eco on any given day. Yesterday was such a day. After an exhaustive search, we have found an amzing individual to come in and help lead Go-Eco in some of our most policy efforts. As you can imagine we're very excited at this fortunate turn of events, and once all the "i"'s are dotted and the "t"'s crossed, we'll be announcing the news here on our blog, first. On another front, a couple of people on our team had… Continue

Daily Dose of Green

Being green, for less

change jarDerek over at Eco Child's Play has come up with a pretty good list of 30 green ways to stretch your budget. First and foremost, use what you have before you go and buy some new green thing. Check your house for bags you can use to tote groceries home before you buy new ones.

Don't decide you have to use cloth napkins when you have 400 paper napkins still in the pantry. Follow the mantra my Grandmother used to remind me of, "Use it up, wear it out, make do, do without." Couple that with reducing, reusing and recycling and finding the extra cash to buy organic milk shouldn't be such a big deal.

Some of those green budget stretchers?
  • Plan your errands. Instead of making multiple trips to the store, the cleaners and the post office each week, make one planned trip to take care of all your errands. This also saves money because you aren't constantly in stores being tempted to buy more stuff.
  • Shop at thrift stores and garage sales, especially for children's clothing.
  • Plant a garden.
  • Go to the library instead of the bookstore.
  • Put up a clothesline to reduce dryer usage.
  • Give up television, or at least cable (or maybe at least premium cable).
Each thing on its own might not save you bunches but together, those 30 things can make a big difference for your wallet and the environment.

Elizabeth Hurley plans to expand her organic food line beyond the pigs

Lately Elizabeth Hurley's been getting more attention for her bio-dynamic farm than any acting she's doing - quick, name her last film! Can't do it, can you? But you probably do know that you can buy Hurley Old Spot Bacon, if only because Kelly just told you about it last week. Not to mention all of the "Hurley's Got The Best Pork" double entendre headlines.

Well, Liz knows how to milk a good thing. In New York for a Breast Cancer Awareness event, she told People that her next enterprise will be developing a line of healthy, organic and low fat food. She talked about the connection between food and health, and how important it is for women to maintain a low fat diet.

I'm not sure exactly how she's going to reconcile the whole pig-bacon-fat thing with low-fat-healthy, but I do applaud her effort to spread the word about organic foods and women's health. Plus, she looks pretty amazing, so if she practices what she preaches, you can't argue with the results!

Entertain your family with Sun and Moon Jars

Sun Jar
If you have a kid who still insists on a nightlight or one intrigued by solar powered things, you might want to invest in a Sun Jar from Perpetual Kid. Mine even entertained my husband for quite awhile.

It's basically a frosted glass mason jar outfitted with a solar charger, battery and some LED lights. Sit it out in the sun for several hours (or a really bright windowsill) and when it gets dark, the light automatically comes on, casting a warm glow.

The Sun Jar puts out a yellow light while the Moon Jar is the same thing but with a blue light. You can turn the jar off entirely with a small switch inside, if you aren't going to use it for an extended period of time.

It does take a bright, direct light to charge up the jars. Today, it is overcast at my house so we probably won't have much light from our jars tonight. We have discovered the jars will charge up under a lamp so I may put the jar on the table while I am reading this evening to get a little bit of light for bedtime. It is definitely not as good as a strong sun charge.

At $39.99 each it might not be something you would buy just for the novelty of it but, if you have little kids that use a nightlight, this could be a really good investment, and a present that would be fascinating. I could see it being a great camping nightlight alternative too.

Bioneers 2008: Nature and Technology Joining Forces

Bioneers Screenshot image Coming up very quickly is an exciting conference called Bioneers, where over 10,000 people converge to hear from leading innovators about solutions to our environmental problems, and to talk with one another about how we can look to nature for the answers on how to save our planet. I’ll be there to cover some of the very cool technological and social advances discussed, and our very own Ken Rother will be there as well to discuss online social activism and engagement (yes, indeed, he’ll be there to brag about all you TreeHuggers!). My enthusiasm for the conference has reached a boi...
